On Saturday, 17 May 2025, Cape Town was treated to a day filled with harmony, rhythm, and spiritual reflection as the annual AMS High School Nasheed Competition took centre stage once again. Hosted under the theme “Soulful Reflection,” this year’s event showcased the musical talents of learners from 13 participating high schools, which included seven boys’ groups in the evening and six girls’ groups in the morning, in a celebration of Islamic tradition, youthful creativity, and community unity.

For those unfamiliar, Nasheed is a form of Islamic vocal music that often features lyrics praising Allah (SWT), sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), or conveying moral and spiritual messages. While traditionally performed without instruments, modern Nasheed performances may incorporate percussion like the daff (frame drum), creating a unique blend of traditional rhythm and contemporary energy. The AMS High School Nasheed Competition has grown to become a much-anticipated platform where learners across the Western Cape showcase their Nasheed artistry, stage presence, and team spirit.

Morning Melodies: Girls’ Segment

The girls’ segment kicked off in the morning, and from the very first performance, it was clear that the level of preparation and dedication was remarkable. Six schools took to the stage with powerful performances, but it was Darul Arqam who once again claimed the top honour. After winning the title in 2024, the girls from Darul Arqam defended their championship with poise and passion, earning the 2025 Champion title for a second consecutive year.

Second place was awarded to Al Azhar, whose performance impressed the judges and audience alike with its harmony and stage presence. The Leadership College (TLC) secured third place, showcasing strong vocal unity and heartfelt execution.

In addition to the main awards, several special accolades were handed out:

Best Presentation went to Al Azhar, recognising their attention to detail, coordination, and visual performance. Best Drummer was awarded to Darul Arqam, for their dynamic yet precise percussion that enhanced the overall performance. Best Soloist, another standout title, also went to Darul Arqam, highlighting the school’s excellence not just in group dynamics but also in individual talent.

Evening Energy: Boys’ Segment

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the boys’ competition brought the energy and competitive spirit to a high. Seven schools stepped onto the stage, filling the hall with passionate voices, carefully arranged harmonies, and crowd-pleasing stage performances.

In a powerful repeat of the girls’ outcome, Darul Arqam also took home the 2025 Boys’ Champion title by making it a clean sweep for the school across both segments. Their consistency and artistry were undeniable, earning them back-to-back victories after also winning the 2024 boys’ competition.

Taking second place was Oracle Academy, whose vibrant and tightly coordinated performance earned them much praise. The Leadership College (TLC) followed closely in third place, making a strong impression with their meaningful song choices and synchronisation.

The boys’ competition also saw special awards handed out:

Best Presentation went to Savvy College, whose stage coordination and visual appeal set them apart. Best Drummer was also won by Savvy College, marking them as a rising talent in the competition circuit. Best Soloist was awarded to Oracle Academy, celebrating an individual voice that captivated both judges and audience.

A Night of Soulful Reflection

What truly tied the day together was the overarching theme: Soulful Reflection. Every group embraced this theme in their own way, and some through lyrics that encouraged self-growth and gratitude, others through their stage presence, reflecting inner sincerity and unity. The theme resonated deeply with the audience and performers alike, reminding everyone that Nasheed is not just about melody but also about meaning.

The performances weren’t just about winning; they were about representing one's school, celebrating Islamic identity, and connecting with the spiritual essence of Nasheed. The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with pride, camaraderie, and respect, not only among the learners but also among teachers, parents, and supporters who came in numbers to cheer for their schools.

More Than a Competition

The AMS High School Nasheed Competition continues to be more than just a contest, it is a platform for young Muslims to express themselves through faith-inspired music, build confidence, and foster positive peer connections. Events like these highlight the power of community and the beauty of combining culture, creativity, and Deen (religion).

As the echoes of "Soulful Reflection" linger in the hearts of all who attended, one thing is certain: The youth are not only keeping the tradition of Nasheed alive but are also elevating it to new, inspiring heights.
